Sharon: My journey to self-catheterization

If you’re just starting out, please be kind to yourself and know that there will be a learning curve, but it does get easier. Soon, self-cath will become second hand to you, too!

Sharon received compensation from Coloplast to provide this information. Each person’s situation is unique so your experience may not be the same.

Hi, my name is Sharon and my journey started over 20 years ago.

I was 33 years old and just had my second child. I knew something was wrong with me, and after numerous tests I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

For the most part, I was able to manage my MS relapses which included the loss of sight in one eye, numbness in my feet and legs, and many times where I couldn’t walk. However, that all changed four years ago. My MS progressed very quickly to the point that I now require a walker and have constant neuropathic pain. The progression brought with it an inability to void my bladder completely.

I went to my urologist who nonchalantly looked at me and casually said “You are going to need to self-catheterize,” followed by “You will get used to it.” Understandably, I was taken aback. He proceeded to hand me a paper with an address to a clinic. I had so many questions!

I remember walking to my car feeling very overwhelmed, angry, and scared. It was a literal gut punch.

I was anxious to make an appointment with the clinic in hopes that they would ease my fears. They were very diligent and clinical with their instructions on how to proceed in a physical capacity. However, from a mental and emotional perspective, I still had so much anxiety and unanswered questions. I felt alone and left to my own devices.

The thought of introducing self-catheterization to my daily routine was daunting. I could not envision what my life would be like moving forward. I can appreciate that in the medical field health professionals can become desensitized as they see patients daily that require catheterization, however, for the patient the prospect is overwhelming and scary.

I spent the next few weeks online and on the phone trying to figure out what supplies I needed and realizing there was a lot to learn.

I found Coloplast® Care online and was so relieved to find an organization that empathized and could assist me with what I was going through.

Not only did they supply me with personal support and resources, they also suggested samples of products that were best suited for me. They even provided guidance with applying to ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) to help subsidize the cost of the supplies I would need. I can honestly say that everyone I have had the pleasure of dealing with at Coloplast has been so helpful and has gone above and beyond to make sure I have everything I need to help me navigate this life-changing situation.

I am thankful that I found Coloplast when I started having to self-catheterize. I did not even know what catheters and supplies I would need. When I contacted a Coloplast® Care advisor, I was relieved to be speaking to someone who was so knowledgeable and helpful. Not only did they make lifestyle recommendations that best suited my needs, but they also provided me with product samples in various sizes and styles.

I use the SpeediCath® Compact Eve when I’m out and about. They’re so discreet, and great for using in public washrooms since they’re pre lubricated. Also, if I’m out socially at someone’s home I can re-insert the used catheter back into the tube and hygienically place it back into my bag to dispose of when I return home.

I came to realize that self-catheterization was making my life easier in some ways. The biggest benefit was not having to constantly go to the restroom when I was out or even for an extended drive. It was actually quite freeing.

Coloplast® Care was an integral part in assisting me in my journey to my new normal and is a great resource for others, as well.

If you’re just starting out, please be kind to yourself and know that there will be a learning curve, but it does get easier. Soon, self-cath will become second hand to you, too!
