Roneel: From Adapting to Life in a Wheelchair to Finding Joy in Unexpected Places

Keep rolling forward—you never know what’s waiting around the corner.

Hey there! My name’s Roneel Gounder, and I’m a proud Canadian from the vibrant city of Edmonton, Alberta.

I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Psychology, with big dreams of making a difference in healthcare.

On December 12, 2021, my life took a drastic turn when I was paralyzed after a life-changing accident. Before that, I was living a whirlwind life—dancing, training to become a paramedic, and competing as an athlete in various sports. Now, my journey looks very different, but I’m embracing it—literally rolling with the punches, as I’m in a wheelchair. Life threw me a curveball, but I’m still in the game, inspiring others and breaking down barriers. Oh, and I’m also the founder of Bollywheels, an inclusive dance group that merges Bollywood with disability awareness.

Let’s rewind to the day my life changed forever. At 24 years old, I was full of energy and, like many Canadians, excited for winter activities. That day, my friends and I went tobogganing—a carefree activity meant for laughs and thrills. We chose a steep hill, perfect for some high-speed fun. Little did I know that hill would become the site of an unexpected life-changing event.

It happened in an instant. As I sped down the hill, faster than I anticipated, everything felt exhilarating—until the sled veered slightly off course. Before I could react, I collided with a tree. The impact was immense, and there wasn’t even time to brace myself.

The pain was immediate and overwhelming, but what scared me most was the numbness.

I couldn’t feel my legs. Lying on the cold ground, unable to move, I watched as my friends rushed to my side and called 911. I tried to stay calm, convincing myself it was temporary—that the feeling in my legs would return once the shock wore off.

What followed was a whirlwind of hospital stays, surgeries, and rehabilitation. I spent 10 days in a coma and woke up to a reality no one is ever prepared for: I was paralyzed. After six months in the hospital, I emerged a different person—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Paralysis wasn’t just about losing mobility; it meant redefining my life. From adapting to everyday tasks to coping with emotional challenges, the journey has been tough but transformative. One unexpected adjustment? Learning to use catheters. Nobody tells you how awkward it feels initially or how much you’ll long for the simplicity of bathroom breaks. But with time, you adapt. You laugh at the mishaps (like accidentally spraying yourself), and you cry when it feels overwhelming.

When I first heard about catheters, my initial reaction was, “Oh great, another reminder of how my life has flipped upside down.” But then, recommendations from the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and fellow wheelchair users led me to Coloplast, and they’ve been a lifesaver—both practically and mentally.
I started with their SpeediCath® Compact catheters, and honestly, I can’t imagine life without them. Initially skeptical, I quickly realized the difference they made. These products weren’t just convenient—they helped me regain a sense of control.

The SpeediCath® Compact, for instance, is discreet and travel-friendly—a little piece of independence in my pocket.

Imagine this: you’re out and about, enjoying life, and nature calls. For someone with my condition, this could easily turn into a stressful moment. But thanks to Coloplast, it doesn’t have to be. Their products are easy to use, reliable, and designed with dignity in mind.

The SpeediCath® Compact is pre-lubricated, meaning no extra supplies or prep time. It’s quick, clean, and discreet—qualities that make my daily life so much smoother. The top-notch quality also means no unpleasant surprises, giving me one less thing to worry about.

Coloplast products allow me to focus on what truly matters—my studies, playing sledge hockey, performing with Bollywheels, or just enjoying time with friends. It’s incredible how one product can restore so much confidence.

First, let me say this: it’s okay to not be okay. Facing a life-altering situation is overwhelming, frustrating, and scary. Allow yourself to feel it all—the tears, the anger, and the moments of joy.

Lean on others for support; you’re not alone in this.

Don’t underestimate the power of community. Connecting with others who’ve been through similar experiences has been life-changing for me. Whether it’s through support groups, social media, or chance encounters, you’ll find people who truly understand.

Practical advice? Invest in products that simplify your life. For me, Coloplast has been a game-changer, helping me reclaim independence and navigate this new chapter with confidence and less stress.
Lastly, remember: life isn’t over—it’s just different. I’ve found joy in unexpected places, from sledge hockey to dance and even in the challenges themselves.

You’re stronger than you think. Keep rolling forward—you never know what’s waiting around the corner.
