You can make your transanal irrigation (TAI) routine run more smoothly by taking a minute to prepare yourself beforehand. First, make sure you have everything you need before you start. Try to reduce stress and relax before and during irrigations.
Use an irrigation checklist

Tips for preparing your irrigation
Preparation is key to achieving success with transanal irrigation. Follow the tips below to help make your irrigation a success.
Think about privacy
Privacy is important when you want to irrigate your bowel. You might consider if you have time to empty your bowel without interruption. Emptying time is individual, but it takes 30 minutes on average. You should also consider the time it takes to prepare and clean up.
Think about what supplies you will need
In addition to your Peristeen® Plus Transanal Irrigation System, there are additional supplies you may want nearby. For example, some people like to use gloves, and some use a cup of water to activate the catheter coating before use. Think about what will make the process easier for you, and make sure to have those items on hand before you begin.
Think about the clean up
TAI can be messy at times, so the better equipped you are for clean up, the less hassle you may have. Keep additional paper towels with you, along with hand sanitizer and a plastic bag to dispose of the catheter, gloves, and any wipes you use.
Make the most of your time on the toilet
Once you have set up your irrigation, there will be some time spent waiting for results. Have something with you, like a magazine or book, to occupy your time.

Important Safety Information: Peristeen Plus is available by prescription only. Peristeen Plus empties the bowel by introducing water into the bowel using a rectal catheter. The anal irrigation procedure should always be carried out with care. Bowel perforation is an extremely rare, but serious and potentially lethal complication to anal irrigation and will require immediate admission to hospital, often requiring surgery. The risk information provided here is not comprehensive. To learn more, talk to your healthcare provider to understand the risks and benefits to determine if Peristeen Plus is right for you. This treatment is prescribed by your physician. Although many patients benefit from the use of this device, results may vary.
