Changing and emptying your urostomy pouch

Learn how and when to change your urostomy pouch.

The first few times you change your urostomy pouch it will likely feel challenging. Make sure that the first couple of times you empty or change your pouch, you do it somewhere you feel comfortable.

Take your time – it may take a few times before you get it right. Eventually, emptying and changing your pouch will become routine.

Getting into a routine

It will be very helpful if you can try to establish a routine for changing your ostomy pouch – try to keep it as simple as possible. You may find that first thing in the morning is a good time for you, however, you will need to determine what is most convenient for you.

How often should I empty the pouch?

Typically, urine will drip continuously into the pouch, and therefore the pouch needs to be emptied several times a day. At night, you may want to use a different type of pouch or a night drain bag, so you do not have to empty your pouch during the night.

How often does your pouching system need changing?

Frequency of changes depends on many things, however, you must always change your ostomy pouch if you feel itching or burning from the skin surrounding your ostomy. Typically you should change your pouching system about twice a week.
