selecting ostomy puching system for children

Selecting the right pouching system

Finding a secure fit for your little one can seem like a big challenge. We guide you in choosing the ostomy products to suit your child best at different stages in life.

Finding the best solution

All children have different body shapes and therefore different needs. Ostomy pouching systems are available in different styles and sizes, to give your child optimal discretion and the freedom to move around. There are one-piece and two-piece pouching ostomy systems and your child’s Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse can help you find the best one for your child.

0-6 months

SenSura® Mio Baby is designed to ease your daily routine. The two-piece system is designed with an access window, enabling you to expel gas without removing the pouch. The 2-piece configuration also enables you to change a soiled pouch without changing the full system - as long as the barrier is still intact and leak-free! These features combine to lessen disturbance of your baby.

2-piece system for children with ostomy

Two-piece system
A two-piece ostomy system has a separate pouch and barrier that attach to each other. This enables you to remove and replace the pouch (if desired) while leaving the barrier still on the body - e.g. for hygiene reasons.

6 months - 4 years

SenSura Mio Kids is designed specially for toddlers and kids aged 6 months to 4 years. The range includes both one-piece and two-piece systems available in drainable (if your child has a colostomy or ileostomy) or urostomy pouch options.

The two-piece products in the SenSura Mio Kids range use an adhesive coupling to attach the pouch and barrier together - this enables the pouching system to maintain good flexibility and follow kids' body movements throughout the day.

4+ years

Everyone's body is different - but as your child grows, they will likely need a larger pouch to accommodate their body shape and output volume! From the age of 4, the SenSura Mio range for adults offers a wide range of solutions. There is a variety of pouches available to suit every kind of stoma and body shape.

The right solution will change over time

What fits your child today, may not fit tomorrow. Just as children can outgrow their clothing, they can also outgrow their ostomy pouching system. It is important that the ostomy pouching system keeps up with the ostomy size and body size of your child’s, as well as the amount of stool or urine coming from the ostomy. Remember that as your child gains weight and grows, the type of ostomy pouching system used may need to be changed. It is therefore a good idea to measure the diameter of the ostomy frequently to ensure the best fit.

Don't hesitate to reach out to our Coloplast® Care advisors as your child grows. Many of our adult sized pouches also come in Mini or Midi sizes which are larger than those pictured above. We'd be glad to help!

Also, as your child reaches adolescence, they may start taking more of an interest in how other teens have managed living with an ostomy.
