Focus on the goal

Remember that the most important thing is that the child defecates. In the same way that glasses help a person see better, Peristeen Plus is simply a tool to help your child empty bowels more effectively.

It might take some time for your child to adjust to a new bowel management method. Try focusing on the positive aspects and help your child stay motivated.

Find your routine then stick to it

Keep to the routine given to you. It is important to be firm, if your child shows reluctance. Establishing the basics and following a set routine will ensure you reach your goal of effective bowel management as quickly as possible.

Show you understand

Incontinence and constipation are very intimate issues that can be difficult for your child to accept. It’s important to help them understand how the body works, why theirs might work differently, and why it’s important that they try different solutions. We call this an empathy-first approach – by showing you understand their challenges, you can gain their willingness to try new solutions.

Simone, mother of Matthjis, 11: "Matthijs takes an iPad into the bathroom with him and he’ll play a game while keeping track of the time."
Matthjis is a Peristeen with balloon catheter user (who received compensation from Coloplast to provide this information). Matthjis has not used the new Peristeen® Plus Transanal Irrigation system.

DON’TS

Don’t let your child’s routine slip. Peristeen Plus works best when you follow your child’s healthcare professional’s advice in terms of frequency. Don’t give up. There is always a learning curve when it comes to new treatments and they might not always be effective straightaway. Use the diary provided in this book and you’ll soon start identifying what works for your child. If your child refuses an irrigation, stay calm and focus on convincing them by emphasizing the benefits of irrigating regularly.
