Bob, spinal cord injury, US: “If I’m going to go on an airplane, I will do an extra Peristeen the night before my flight – just to make absolutely sure my bowel is empty.”

Bob is a Peristeen with Balloon catheter user (who received compensation from Coloplast to provide this information). Bob has not tried the new Peristeen Plus Transanal Irrigation system.

Experiencing new things is often the reason for traveling — but when it comes to feeling secure and comfortable, it would be nice to keep the surprises to a minimum. The idea of traveling can be quite intimidating for some Peristeen Plus users, especially if you’re still getting used to your treatment. We have gathered some practical tips that can help you enjoy your time away from home without worrying too much about bowel issues.

Before your trip

Leaving your home requires some planning ahead of time.

  • Make sure you have an up-to-date travel insurance policy.
  • Order adequate products for your journey, and make sure you order them well in advance, the last thing you want to do is run out when you're away.
  • If you are traveling by air, divide your supplies in different bags, just in case your luggage is lost or the flight is delayed. But remember to always keep essentials in your hand luggage.
  • Pack a smart kit: including everything you might need in case something happens. Whether you are flying, driving or travelling by plane it is nice to have a your most needed supplies and personal belongings close.
  • If it helps you feel more secure, consider using Peristeen Plus before you travel. Making sure your bowels are empty is a good way to reduce the risk of an accident while traveling.
  • To avoid problems while going through airport security checkpoints, make sure your water bag is empty.
  • Bring your disability card: If you have a disability, it might be possible to get a card you can show. Ask your healthcare provider or your local association about it.

Make a packing list

You can never be too prepared. Download a packing list (link to packing list) including all must-haves.

Have a toilet at hand

Download our free WheelMate™ app (link) from Google Play or the App Store. It makes it easier to find clean, accessible and nearby toilets when you’re away. Whether you're local or traveling, WheelMate can help you plan your day.

Bring a travel certificate

Fill out and bring an enclosed travel certificate. Note the name of your product(s) on the travel certificate and/or Coloplast around the world – taking a picture of them may also be a good idea.

If you’re traveling for an extended time, make sure you have contact information for your Peristeen Plus supplier at your destination. Call Coloplast® Care on xxx for more details.

If possible, stick to your normal routine. Make sure to wash your hands before and after using Peristeen Plus. As a general rule, tap water that is safe to drink is also safe for irrigation. If in doubt, use bottled water at room temperature or cooled boiled water.

It’s common to suffer from an upset stomach while traveling so don’t worry if this happens to you. Carry a copy of your prescription details and take your doctor’s contact information with you in case you have questions while away. Being aware of local medical services could also be useful.

Should any issues arise with your Peristeen Plus system while you are away, call Coloplast Care on 54663522. We can support you over the phone or put you in touch with someone locally who can provide assistance.
