Cleaning your Peristeen® Plus Transanal Irrigation System

How do you ensure a thorough cleaning of your Peristeen Plus system after irrigation? Learn how to take care of your system.

Cleaning your Peristeen Plus system after each irrigation is important. The following cleaning tips will help make sure your system is ready for your next irrigation.

Rinsing and cleaning:

With the exception of the single-use catheter, all components can be washed in mild soapy water. The strap can be washed at 60°C and hung to dry. Discard the single-use catheter in your regular household waste but never flush it down the toilet. The catheter shall not be connected when you clean the system.
It is not necessary to disassemble the system before cleaning the external surfaces. The tubing can be cleaned by turning the knob on the control unit to the water symbol and pumping the excess water out of the tube. The tube with the blue connector can be replaced if it becomes soiled.
The internal surface of the tubes, control unit and water bag lid, including the suction pipe, can be cleaned by the following procedure:

Unlock the connector from the catheter.
  1. Open the lid and fill the bag to the top with mild soapy water. As the bag unfolds, the water level will fall and you might need to refill it as necessary. The bag must be filled completely to function properly. Close the lid by clicking it into place. Turn the knob on the control unit to the turquoise water symbol and start pumping the water through the tubing and into a sink or similar. Continue until the water bag is emptied.
  2. Repeat this procedure twice with clean tap water to remove soap remains. After the last rinsing, unlock the connector from the lid and follow the normal drying procedure as described below.

Drying:

Hanging the water bag and tubes over the taps in your bath or shower for an hour after each irrigation will help you avoid black stains.

Open the water bag lid and pour excess water out of the bag:
  1. Keep the lid open and store it in a dry place for at least 1 hour. If possible, keep the water bag upside down while drying.
  2. Hang the control unit, including the tubes, upside down (e.g. by using a rubber band) to dry for at least 1 hour before storing it away from sunlight in the toilet bag.
  3. It is important to turn the knob on the control unit counter-clockwise to the finish and storage symbol before it is hung to dry.

Storage:

Store your Peristeen Plus system and the rectal catheters at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. Ensure the tubes are not kinked and the system and all its parts are kept away from sharp objects.
