Navigating intimacy

Physical intimacy may be a cause for concern when living with an ostomy. Get answers to the questions you may not feel comfortable asking.

Living with an ostomy and navigating intimacy is a deeply personal journey that varies in experience for each individual. This article explores some key considerations around physical intimacy when you have an ostomy.

Penetrative sex

Living with an ostomy can place limits on some sex positions – you may have to adapt or adjust what you were once used to in order to accommodate the presence of your ostomy pouch. Trying out different things is key to see what is right for you. Communicating with your partner(s) about what is comfortable for you and any concerns is important so you can enjoy intimacy and not let your pouch disrupt your sex life.

Ostomy surgery can place constraints on anal sex. Depending on the type of surgery you have, this may or may not be possible. It’s important to choose a suitable lubricant. Always talk to your healthcare provider for specific advice based on your personal situation. It’s important to note that an ostomy must never be used for penetrative sex.

Feeling good and experimenting

After surgery, you may feel less in tune with your body, or perhaps less confident being intimate. Try to take the time to work with your partner to discover what is good for you and be open to trying new things.
You want to try additional measures to help you feel confident when being intimate. Sometimes, people may choose to conceal their ostomy pouch in specific underwear. Others may choose to use a supporting product to help secure their ostomy barrier and pouch to increase their confidence.
