What to expect from the Peristeen® journey.

The benefits of TAI for your child

By using transanal irrigation (TAI) routinely, your child can have better control over their bowels and ultimately, have a better quality of life.

There are multiple benefits to your child if they continue with their transanal irrigation treatment. It is therefore important that you support them in their treatment so they can make this lasting, life-changing difference.*

How will my child benefit from transanal irrigation long term?

Perhaps most importantly, if TAI is suitable for your child and they find a routine that works well for them, it may reduce the chances of needing to choose more invasive treatments or resuming with conservative bowel care methods to manage their bowel issues in the future.
Transanal irrigations can be performed at home and over time you can teach your child how to perform their own irrigation. As they grow up, TAI can offer them more independence in relation to their bowels. Peristeen Plus will reduce your child’s need for assistance and they will be less dependent on carers.*

It can take up to 3 months to establish a successful TAI routine with your child. Every TAI regime is different, but long term, they can successfully participate in their own bowel irrigations and preserve their independence.

The passing of stool becomes more predictable when using TAI long term. Moreover, your child will be able to choose when they want to evacuate their bowel. With transanal irrigation, the passage of stool happens at a pre-determined time, rather than at unpredictable intervals. When your child routinely uses TAI, it is also possible that additional treatment methods such as laxatives can be reduced. Remember to discuss any changes to your child’s medication with their healthcare provider.

TAI can allow your child to perform high-volume irrigation. This could allow them to stay continent for up to 2 days and help them to get back to being a kid and having fun. By continuing with their transanal irrigations long term, they will have more opportunities to explore the world with confidence.
By continuing with transanal irrigation treatment, your child may also save time managing their bowel compared to more conservative bowel treatments.

How else can I help my child with their bowel?

It is extremely important that you make lifestyle modifications to accommodate your child’s healthcare needs. Long term, some children may be able to somewhat improve symptoms of constipation and soiling by making modifications to their diet. You could, for example, aim for a varied diet and plenty of fruit and veg.

Also, ensure your child drinks enough every day. Fluid intake is important and can help improve your child’s bowel health.

*This is evidenced for TAI with Peristeen Plus with balloon catheter.
