Travel tips when travelling with your child

Experiencing new things ithrough traveling is always exciting. When it comes to feeling secure and comfortable about your child's bowel management during the trip, it's nice to keep surprises to a minimum. We've put together some tips to help you and your family be well-prepared.

Esther, Holland, Quint’s mother
Quint, 12, was born with spina bifida and uses Peristeen®
"Think ahead and consider what kind of facilities are available where you are going. Quint needs more time in the bathroom so we prefer to have a private bathroom available."

Quint is a Peristeen with balloon catheter user (who received compensation from
Coloplast to provide this information). Quint has not used the new Peristeen® Plus Transanal Irrigation system.

The idea of being away from home – even for short trips – can be quite intimidating when your child is using Peristeen Plus. This article has practical tips to help you and your family enjoy time away from home without worrying too much about bowel issues.

Before going away

Leaving your home requires that you make some extra preparations for both your journey and stay.

  • Ensure you and your child have an up-to-date travel insurance policy.
  • Order adequate products for your journey, and make sure you order them well in advance, the last thing you want to do is run out when you're away.
  • If you're travelling on an aeroplane, divide your supplies in different bags, just in case your luggage is lost or the flight is delayed. But remember to always keep essentials in your hand luggage.
  • Pack a smart kit: including everything you might need in case something happens. Whether you are flying, driving or travelling by plane it is nice to have your most needed supplies and personal belongings close.
  • If it helps you feel more secure, consider using Peristeen Plus before you travel. Making sure your child’s bowels are empty is a good way to reduce the risk of an accident while travelling.
  • To avoid problems at the airport security checkpoint, make sure the water bag is empty.
  • Bring a disability card: If your child has a disability, it might be possible to get a card you can show. Ask your healthcare provider or your local association about it.
  • If your child is travelling without you, remember to inform relevant parties about their condition so they are prepared for all eventualities.

Make a packing list

Most children like routines. Make a packing list so you remember your child's Peristeen Plus kit, enough catheters, motivational treats and any other items you might need while away. Download a packing list to ensure you remember all must-haves.

Locate the nearest restroom

Download our complimentary WheelMate™ app from Google Play or the App Store. It makes it easier to find clean, accessible and nearby toilets when you’re away. Whether you're local or travelling, WheelMate can help you and your child plan your day.

Bring a travel certificate

Fill out and bring an enclosed travel certificate. Note the name of your childs product(s) on the travel certificate. Taking a picture of them may also be a good idea. If you’re going away for a long time, make sure you have contact information for a Peristeen Plus supplier at your destination. Call Coloplast® Care on xxx for more details.

While being away

We all know it – as soon as you have arrived at your destination, vacation mode kicks in. But there are still things to consider to make sure you and your child can enjoy a care-free vacation without unwanted complications. Here are some tips that might help:

Keep routines and schedules

Stick to your child’s normal routine if possible. Tap water that is safe to drink is also safe for irrigations. If in doubt, use bottled water at room temperature or cooled boiled water. It’s not uncommon for people to experience more irregular bowel movements when traveling. This may also be the case for your child, and it’s probably not a cause for concern.

Bring important information

Carry a copy of your child’s prescription details and take your doctor’s contact information with you in case you have questions while away. Being aware of local medical services could also be useful.

Need support?
