Women - how to insert an intermittent catheter
Before starting to empty your bladder with a catheter, always set out your supplies as instructed by your Healthcare Professional.
1. Wash your hands well with soap and water or a hand sanitiser.
2. Open your catheter and prepare it according to the instructions for use supplied by the manufacturer or your Healthcare Professional.
3. If you are in a wheelchair, come forward in your seat and sit in a slouched position so your pelvis is tilted slightly forward and you are positioned best to get good access.
4. Separate the labia and gently clean the area around the urethral opening (use mild pH neutral soap and water or an alcohol free wipe).
5. Wash your hands again. Do not touch anything else apart from your catheter after you have washed your hands for a second time. It is a good idea to use your dominant hand to touch the catheter and your other hand to touch anything else needed.
6. Find the urethra and gently insert the catheter at a slightly upward angle towards the small of the back until urine starts to flow. It can help to hold your catheter with your thumb on top so you can guide the angle with your middle finger.

7. Once the urine stops running, begin to withdraw the catheter slowly.
8. If more urine starts to drain out, stop briefly until urine flow stops again. As you remove the catheter, you can place your finger over the end to stop any back flow.
9. If you are using a catheter with a bag, dispose of the urine down the toilet.
10. Throw away the catheter after using it (household waste) and wash your hands once more.
