Limits are a matter of perception: Bob’s journey to his ideal catheter

After sustaining a spinal cord injury in a skiing accident, Bob feared that the injury would limit his lifestyle. A former professional skier and movie stuntman, Bob has always been a man of adventure and highly determined. “I was motivated to learn everything and not be limited by my condition,” he said.

Bob told himself, “If I can’t walk. I can fly.” Armed with this mantra, he went on to become one of the pioneers of adaptive hang-gliding, where he reached heights of 20,000 feet. In his adventures, Bob has pushed the limits of adaptive sports and holds a certification in both adaptive scuba diving and skiing.

“Limits are a matter of perception,” he said.

For Bob, learning how to self-catheterize was a big part of regaining independence, and he was relentless in his search for a catheter that fit his lifestyle. Because inserting a catheter has always been challenging for him, he has tried many different brands and even more catheter types to find his ideal catheter. He is always curious to hear about new products, so when he heard about SpeediCath® Flex Set, he was excited to try it.

“I have to say, it is a completely different experience; it’s night and day from anything I've ever tried in almost 38 years,” Bob said. He remarked that the first thing he noticed was the flexible tip and how easy it made inserting the catheter. “It makes the catheter go through like there is just nothing there. There was zero resistance,” he said.

As an active person who is always on the move, he appreciates that the material of the bag is thin and clear so he can keep tabs on his hydration level and if he’s voiding enough. He also commented on how easy emptying the bag is. “It tears exactly right in the corner. This makes it really easy to pour out without having any worry about whether it is going to fly all over the bathroom,” he said. “If you compare this to some of the other brands, this is a big deal because some of them will tear off completely, and I would end up wet and soaking the whole bathroom, which is really mortifying.”

With its dry sleeve for a no-touch catheterization experience, flexible tip for easy insertion, and easy to open and empty bag for a no-mess experience, Bob found the product he’d been searching for.

“I like to travel a lot, I have an ample circle of friends, and I am always on the go. I am thrilled about finally finding a catheter I am excited to use every day, home or away,” Bob said.
