Urostomy diet tips

Learn how to adjust your diet and what to eat and drink in order to avoid complications with your urostomy.

Do I need to follow a special diet? Is there anything I can't eat?

After any type of surgery it takes a while for your body to adjust, and the same is true after your urostomy surgery. In time you’ll find that you should be able to eat and drink the same things you used to enjoy before surgery.

Below are some general guidelines about food and fluid intake that are helpful for people who have a urostomy. However, if your Healthcare Professional has recommended a special diet, you should follow that advice.

Diet

Eating small portions is a good idea

Right after surgery your Stomal Therapy Nurse probably gave you some instructions on portion size and to avoid eating large meals initially. You may feel better if you try to eat smaller portions.

Will I react differently to certain foods?

Generally, you should not have to change your diet after your urostomy surgery. Some foods such as asparagus, fish and spices may cause your urine to have an unusual odour and colour, but this is nothing to be worried about.

Diet

Remember to stay hydrated

Because of the nature of your surgery, you will produce more urine than a person who has not had a urostomy. This means you need to drink relatively more to help your body to maintain the right fluid balance.

People with a urostomy are usually advised to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid a day (unless your Healthcare Professional advises otherwise).

Alcohol and caffeinated drinks

Alcohol is fine in moderation as is tea and coffee, but water and juices are still better sources of liquid, so be careful not to use coffee or tea as a substitute for water.

What other tips should I know about?

You may want to ask your Healthcare Professional if you can take Vitamin C to increase the acidity of your urine. Keeping your urine acidic may help to prevent UTIs, decrease urine odour and keep your skin healthy.

Feeling comfortable with your body is important, especially after this type of surgery. Just as important is enjoying good food and beverages as a part of a full life. We’re hoping these guidelines are helpful to you. As always, contact your Healthcare Professional with specific questions.
